Released captives to receive more opportunities for treatment and adaptation

The procedures for the medical treatment, rehabilitation, and adaptation of Ukrainians released from russian captivity will be improved.

The Government adopted the relevant resolution upon the proposal of the Ministry of Defence.

“We are improving the medical treatment, rehabilitation, and adaptation of Ukrainians released from russian captivity – both military personnel and civilians,” said the Minister of Defence of Ukraine, Denys Shmyhal.

The resolution provides for the following:

  • More precise requirements for the medical examination of former prisoners. The objective is to assess the individual’s health status to enable the most effective treatment.
  • A set of therapeutic, preventive, and rehabilitation measures aimed at restoring the individual to a full and active life;
  • Expansion of the network of rehabilitation facilities by incorporating reintegration centers operated by the Ministry of Defence, the Ministry of Internal Affairs, the Security Service of Ukraine, the State Guard Administration, the Foreign Intelligence Service, and other institutions.
  • Enhancing the social and administrative components of the rehabilitation process. Individuals will receive assistance in obtaining national ID cards and international passports directly at the institutions where they are undergoing treatment.

Furthermore, the Ministry is drafting amendments to relevant orders to classify injuries sustained by defenders in captivity on par with battlefield injuries.

“We will ensure that all those who endured the horrors of russian captivity receive care and a personalized approach. We value every individual and safeguard their life and health,” emphasized Denys Shmyhal.
