Military units will be authorized to procure drone components using general fund resources

Military units on the line of contact will gain greater flexibility to upgrade and tailor unmanned systems to frontline operational needs.
“Starting 1 January, we are expanding the capabilities of the Ukrainian military to develop unmanned systems. Military units will be able to procure drone components using general fund resources. This additional funding will enable warriors to quickly equip and adapt drones for specific missions,” said the Minister of Defence of Ukraine, Denys Shmyhal.
How it worked previously
Previously, units could procure drone components only using special fund resources. This limited flexibility: even when general fund resources were available, they could not be used for drone components or upgrades.
How it will work now
Going forward, drone components may be procured using the full range of state funding allocated to a unit for unmanned systems, including resources from the general fund.
The decision is scheduled to enter into force in 2026.
Why this matters
The unmanned systems domain is continuously evolving, with new developments, changing operating conditions, and varying requirements across different sectors of the front.
Greater financial flexibility allows units to procure additional components and parts for unmanned systems and better adapt equipment to specific combat missions—without unnecessary delays or bureaucracy.
