The Ministry of Defence has joined the establishment of a training hub to raise awareness of the mine threat

To inform the population about mine threats, Ukraine will establish the International Information and Innovation Training Hub on Humanitarian Demining. This was announced during the forum “Specifics of Informing the Population about the Risks Associated with Mines and Other Explosive Ordnance.”

“The enemy uses advanced munitions and delivery systems capable of striking any part of Ukraine with cluster munitions, mines, and other hazardous explosive elements. Therefore, we must focus on conducting information campaigns not only in the de-occupied territories but across the entire country, targeting various segments of the population—from schoolchildren to officials of executive authorities and local self-government,” emphasized Colonel Oleh Shuvarskyi, Head of the Mine Action Department and Deputy Head of the Main Directorate for Mine Action, Civil Protection, and Environmental Safety.

The establishment of the International Information and Innovation Training Hub on Humanitarian Demining will create a central platform for introducing innovative approaches to mine risk awareness—from developing training programs to producing informational and media content, as well as interactive applications. Plans also include the establishment of an innovative Humanitarian Demining Museum at the hub.

This will enhance information and outreach efforts about the dangers of explosive ordnance, which are already being carried out by the demining units of Ukraine’s Security and Defence Forces and mine action operators.

The hub is planned to be established within the Center for Humanitarian Demining, which operates under the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine.

Over 6 million civilians currently reside in areas contaminated with explosive ordnance (EO). Since the onset of russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine, 1,224 people have been affected by mines and explosive remnants of war, with 345 fatalities. Over half of all mine-related incidents affecting civilians have taken place in the Kharkiv, Mykolaiv, and Kherson oblasts.
