The Ministry of Defense is testing new samples of women’s winter uniforms and introducing inclusive features
The Ministry of Defense of Ukraine has started testing new models of women’s uniforms, specifically demi-season and winter uniforms. This was discussed during a meeting on inclusivity and accessibility issues, chaired by Deputy Minister of Defense, Brigadier General of Justice Serhii Melnyk.
Currently, field testing of the demi-season uniform for women is underway, and the first samples of the winter uniform are ready for scientific trial.
“Introducing women’s uniforms is essential, particularly because the men’s size chart is not suitable for women,” stated Serhii Melnyk. However, he added that the process is being slowed by low interest from manufacturers in providing test samples necessary for developing technical specifications for production.
The Ministry is also considering the results of testing summer uniforms and undergarments in field conditions. Changes to the technical specifications of some military clothing elements have already been planned based on feedback from female service members.
Serhii Melnyk also emphasized the need to provide women’s body armor that meets protective standards while reducing the weight of the armor plates.
As part of the “Wounded Soldier’s Kit” project initiated by the Ministry this year, adaptive clothing requirements are being developed to be provided to wounded service members. According to the plan, starting in 2025, such clothing kits will be provided permanently and free of charge at stabilization points and during inpatient treatment. The project includes all Defense and Security Forces units and requires interagency coordination and approval of a relevant resolution by the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine.
Additionally, as part of implementing Ukraine’s National Barrier-Free Strategy, the Ministry of Defense will renovate some of its buildings by the end of 2024.
“This year, work has been planned and funded for 10 medical facilities under the Ministry of Defense. Lifts, ramps, and other equipment will be installed to assist service members with disabilities and specific needs. We are already planning further steps in this direction for next year,” Serhii Melnyk noted.
The Deputy Minister added that a list of Ministry facilities for reconstruction in 2025 is currently being developed, as well as timelines for beginning and completing the work and funding sources.
