The Ministry of Defence enhances quality control of fuels and lubricants: testing volume increased 3.5-fold
The Ministry of Defence of Ukraine has systematically strengthened quality control measures for fuels and lubricants utilized by the Armed Forces of Ukraine. These efforts have enhanced the safety and reliability of military equipment on the front lines.
Since the onset of the full-scale invasion, the number of fuel and lubricant tests conducted for the AFU has increased by more than 3.5 times. In 2022, 1,500 samples were tested; in 2023, this figure rose to 4,000; and in 2024, it exceeded 5,000.
“Quality control of fuels and lubricants directly impacts the combat readiness of our army. We cannot allow substandard fuels or lubricants to cause equipment failures or disrupt combat operations,” stated Deputy Minister of Defence of Ukraine, Brigadier General of Justice Serhii Melnyk.
Testing is conducted at the extensive fuel and lubricants laboratory of the Main Department of Quality Control (MDQC), which oversees the entire quality assurance process.
The laboratory is equipped with state-of-the-art technology and staffed by highly qualified personnel. Quality control processes are continuously automated, accelerating laboratory testing and minimizing human error in the results.
Through state and volunteer support, a modern renovation of the laboratory has been completed, creating comfortable working conditions for its staff. Employees consistently enhance their skills through training and professional development programs, enabling them to master new testing methodologies and expand the laboratory’s capabilities.
A dedicated training unit is currently being formed within the MDQC to train specialists in “Quality Control of Fuels and Lubricants.” This initiative will include training for ground aviation specialists supporting aviation units of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, the National Guard, the State Border Guard Service, and other components of the Defence Forces.
“Additionally, under the leadership of the Main Department of Quality Control, methodological guidelines on chemmotology are being developed, and R&D activities are being conducted regarding the using of fuel and lubricants in military equipment. The Department’s laboratory participates in arbitration and inter-laboratory comparative testing, consistently demonstrating its technical competence and professionalism,” reported Colonel Ihor Leshchenko, Head of the Main Department of Quality Control.
Thanks to enhanced quality control measures, substandard fuels and lubricants are prevented from being used in military equipment. Ensuring quality remains a top priority for the Ministry of Defence in its procurement processes for the needs of the Armed Forces of Ukraine.
