russia modified Kh-101 missiles four times to strengthen its aerial terror campaign — Ukraine still intercepts 88%

Since the beginning of 2026, Ukraine’s air defense has intercepted about 88% of the Kh-101, Kh-55, and Kh-555 cruise missiles launched by russia against Ukraine. Ukraine’s air defense continues to demonstrate high effectiveness despite the enemy’s attempts to improve its strike capabilities.
In particular, since the onset of the full-scale invasion, russia has carried out four major upgrades of the Kh-101 missile, according to detailed analyses conducted by specialists from the Ministry of Defence of Ukraine following the missiles’ use in real combat conditions.
Analysis by specialists identified four major modernization stages of the Kh-101 strategic air-launched cruise missile:
- Dual-warhead modification — russia sacrificed the missile’s “excess” range (2,500 km) to integrate a second warhead by reducing fuel tank capacity;
- Cluster submunitions with zirconium elements — the new submunitions contain zirconium coatings that sustain combustion, indicating that the missiles were designed to strike oil storage facilities, fuel depots, and other civilian infrastructure;
- Upgraded combined navigation system — integrates a laser gyroscope-based inertial navigation system, satellite guidance, and an electro-optical scene-matching correlation system;
- New SP-504 self-protection jammer suite — the active channel disrupts radar and SAM engagement systems, while the passive channel deploys decoy flares.
The purpose of all these modifications is to compensate for the growing effectiveness of Ukraine’s air defense and intensify terror against Ukrainian civilians.

The protection of civilians and infrastructure remains a top priority for Ukraine. The goal is to identify 100% of aerial threats in real time and intercept at least 95% of missiles and drones.
As previously reported by the Ministry of Defence, in April 2026, Ukraine’s air defense intercepted nearly 6,000 enemy drones and missiles — 88.5% of the total launched by russia.
