One year of the UK–Ukraine One Hundred Year Partnership: how the Agreement strengthens Ukraine’s security

One year ago, Ukraine and the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland signed the Declaration on the One Hundred Year Partnership.

The Agreement sets out the framework for cooperation over the next 100 years. While it covers a broad spectrum of areas—from defence and security to the economy, energy, science, and education—its core lies in the security and defence domains.

The agreement formalised the United Kingdom’s long-term commitment to supporting Ukraine’s defence capabilities. This includes, in particular, stable annual military assistance of £3 billion, as well as London’s commitment to maintaining this level of support for as long as necessary to ensure Ukraine’s security. This approach marks a shift from ad hoc assistance to predictable and systematic support.

The Agreement places particular emphasis on training and capability development within the Defence Forces of Ukraine. The United Kingdom has committed to expanding training programmes for Ukrainian service members, including in the aviation domain, and to supporting the provision of modern weapons and equipment to Ukraine in coordination with partners and allies.

Defence-industrial cooperation constitutes an essential pillar of the One Hundred Year Partnership. The Agreement provides for the development of joint projects in weapons manufacturing, including unmanned systems, artillery, and other high-technology solutions. This establishes the basis for strengthening Ukraine’s defence industry and reducing dependence on external suppliers in the medium to long term.

The Agreement also reaffirmed the United Kingdom’s unwavering support for Ukraine’s Euro-Atlantic course. The parties agreed to further enhance interoperability between the Armed Forces of Ukraine and NATO forces and to view Ukraine’s future membership in NATO as a key driver of long-term stability and security in Europe.

The document includes a dedicated section on maritime security. Ukraine and the United Kingdom agreed to cooperate to enhance security in the Black Sea, the Sea of Azov, and the Baltic Sea—a critical factor in safeguarding maritime lines of communication, freedom of navigation, and the region’s economic stability.

The anniversary of the One Hundred Year Partnership Agreement underscores that it represents not a political declaration or a short-term gesture of solidarity, but a strategic choice and a set of long-term commitments. The Agreement has come to symbolise deep trust between Kyiv and London. It represents a key contribution to shaping a resilient security architecture for Ukraine in the context of ongoing russian aggression.
