MoD’s DOT to procure DNA sample collection systems for the Armed Forces of Ukraine for the first time
The State Operator for Non-Lethal Acquisition (DOT), the acquisition agency of the Ministry of Defence, is launching its first procurement of biological sample collection systems for the Armed Forces of Ukraine. These DNA sample collection sets serve as a critical tool for the identification of the fallen, the search for missing-in-action service members, and the identification of unidentified bodies. Under the procurement, 150,000 sets are planned, with a total value of UAH 37.8 million.
The procured systems will be used to collect biological samples and subsequently establish a genomic register of service members. This register is critically essential in wartime, enabling a substantial reduction in identification timelines and ensuring legally confirmed results for the families of service members.
All genomic information will be stored in compliance with the Law of Ukraine ‘On State Registration of Human Genomic Information’, under specially equipped conditions that ensure data protection, integrity, and long-term retention.
The systems comply with modern safety and quality standards, ensuring a standardized, straightforward sample collection process, suitability for transportation and long-term storage, and legally valid results.
It should be noted that the systematic collection of biological samples is an international practice: in most developed countries, it serves as a baseline approach for the accurate and timely identification of service members.
Genetic analysis not only enables families to receive confirmed information on the fate of their loved ones but also plays a significant role in documenting wartime events, preserving historical memory, and reinforcing the state system of registration and identification.
