Inspections conducted by the MoD prevented thousands of tons of low-quality foodstuff from being delivered to the military

Since the beginning of the year, MoD’s Department of Food Safety and Veterinary Medicine specialists have conducted more than 99 thousand laboratory tests. These measures prevented over 2000 tons of substandard and dangerous products from being delivered to the military.

Foodstuff gets inspected both at suppliers' storage places and on the territory of military units. Food samples are then gathered for further analysis.

Samples are forwarded to Food Safety Centers for registration and subsequent laboratory analysis, followed by the issuance of test reports.

Mandatory examination is required for canned food items like meat, vegetable-meat, and fish to prevent the higher risk of food poisoning. The general list of foodstuff to be examined is notably broader and includes, for example, sausages, cheese, butter, groats, oil, etc.

The head of such a center in Kyiv, Lieutenant Colonel Mykhailo Kalabskyi, noted that the foodstuff quality is improving. However, some unscrupulous suppliers may still offer low-quality products.

“This is documented regularly, with subsequent rectification of issues. We also implement measures against those who try to abuse or manipulate,” mentioned Lieutenant Colonel Mykhailo Kalabskyi.

Within the Department of Food Safety, there are three Centers, each assigned its own area of responsibility.

These Centers include food safety labs, veterinary inspection units, and animal health and welfare units.
