Drones, cybersecurity, rehabilitation: higher military educational institutions are intensifying training in modern disciplines while introducing new fields of study
At the request of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, the country's higher military education institutions have expanded training in the most in-demand military specialties and are introducing new fields of study.
“Modern military challenges necessitate extensive knowledge and specialized training among service members. We require experts who excel in cutting-edge technologies, can effectively work with drones, and possess a strong understanding of cybersecurity and information protection. Military education is continuously adapting to meet these challenges. We are updating our training programs to prepare personnel who will secure the Armed Forces of Ukraine's advantage on the battlefield—on land, in the air, at sea, and in cyberspace,” said Deputy Minister of Defence of Ukraine, Brigadier General of Justice Serhii Melnyk.
The most in-demand specialties within the Armed Forces of Ukraine, for which higher military education institutions have intensified military specialist training since the onset of the full-scale invasion:
- Unmanned aerial systems for operational-tactical, operational, and strategic deployment;
- Tactical-level unmanned systems;
- Specialists in the maintenance and repair of unmanned systems and platforms;
- Information security and cybersecurity in information and telecommunication systems;
- Cyber protection and cyber influence, cyber warfare systems;
- Command and control of units operating marine unmanned systems;
- Maintenance and repair of marine unmanned systems.
These specialties were introduced in Ukraine’s higher military education institutions starting in 2014, with some being added after the onset of the full-scale russian invasion.
The year 2025 will see the introduction of new specialties: psychological support for service members in units and aboard ships (by branch of the Armed Forces), as well as physical and sports rehabilitation for military personnel.
Despite the increasing role of modern technologies on the battlefield, traditional military specialties remain in demand within Ukraine's Armed Forces. These specialties encompass legal counsel, military translation, international relations in defense, military psychology, military journalism, finance, and military economics.
