Denys Shmyhal and NATO Senior Representative discuss support for Ukraine under the PURL program
In Kyiv, Ukraine’s Minister of Defence, Denys Shmyhal, met with NATO Senior Representative in Ukraine, Patrick Turner.
The Minister of Defence thanked NATO leaders and member countries for their solidarity and support for Ukraine, including the joint launch of the PURL mechanism with the USA. Denys Shmyhal stated that the initiative has proven effective, with allies providing $2 billion to procure American weapons for Ukraine.
“The discussion focused on long-term support for Ukraine within the framework of the PURL program. Bringing in new participants and increasing contributions is crucial for the Defence Forces of Ukraine to acquire American weapons,” the Defence Minister said.
The parties also discussed other ways to address Ukraine’s defense priorities.
“By the end of the year, Ukraine requires around $6 billion to procure key unmanned weapon systems, including FPV drones, interceptor drones, long-range drones, and missiles. I highlighted the importance of backing Ukrainian manufacturers within the framework of the ‘Build in Ukraine’ and ‘Build with Ukraine’ programs. We have strong industrial cooperation with NATO countries and significant prospects for its further development,” said Denys Shmyhal.
Furthermore, the parties discussed the establishment of effective security guarantees involving the Coalition of the Willing, including steps to ensure lasting peace and prevent renewed russian aggression.
