Valerii Churkin: The Ministry of Defence is guiding weapons manufacturers toward unified standards in unmanned systems production

Міноборони націлює зброярів на уніфікацію у виробництві безпілотних систем – Валерій Чуркін

Deputy Minister of Defence of Ukraine, Valerii Churkin, conducted a working meeting with manufacturers of FPV systems, representatives of UAV-operating combat units, logistics support structures, military-scientific institutions, and relevant departments of the Ministry of Defence.

The discussions focused on current challenges in the development and production of unmanned systems, effective solutions to overcome them, and future directions for advancing the aerial unmanned systems sector. A key focus was the maximum possible unification of domestically produced unmanned systems, which would facilitate the scaling of production and enhance their operational effectiveness in combat.

Deputy Minister of Defence Valerii Churkin reported that hundreds of enterprises in Ukraine are engaged in the development and production of unmanned systems. Currently, the arsenal of the Armed Forces of Ukraine includes dozens of FPV systems with similar tactical and technical specifications but differing in their platforms, combat payloads, software, and components sourced from various manufacturers. The broad range of UAVs currently in service demands significant time and effort to train operators and maintenance personnel, as well as to develop and tailor combat payloads for each specific platform. It is, therefore, essential to pursue the unification and standardization of specific categories of weapon systems to significantly enhance their operational effectiveness and simplify maintenance.

“Managing and maintaining an extensive fleet of diverse weapon systems requires substantial resources and time. Therefore, the current priority in the development and production of FPV systems is to maximize unification across UAV models and to establish technical standards for new unmanned aerial systems, their components, combat payloads, software, and related elements. It is necessary to scale up technological solutions that have demonstrated high effectiveness in combat conditions. Furthermore, the development and production of new models must rely on reliable, verified supply chains for components,” emphasized the Deputy Minister of Defence of Ukraine.
