Ukrainian veterans are mastering geographic information systems (GIS) and mechanized demining machines

Українські ветерани опановують геоінформаційні системи та машини механізованого розмінування

A group of Ukrainian veterans who were wounded by explosive devices has completed a UNDP-supported training course on the basics of geographic information systems (GIS) software.

Colonel Ruslan Berehulia, Head of the Main Directorate for Mine Action, Civil Protection, and Environmental Safety at the Ministry of Defense, emphasized that geographic information systems now play a crucial role in mine action as they enhance operational efficiency.

Geographic information systems facilitate mapping contaminated areas, monitoring the demining process, and using databases. The application of GIS technology is increasingly prevalent within mine action efforts. Hence, this training initiative unlocks new opportunities for veterans seeking to develop their expertise in humanitarian demining,” said Colonel Ruslan Berehulia.

Additionally, with UNDP support, Kyiv is hosting an introductory training course for veterans on the use of mechanized demining machines to clear the de-occupied territories of Ukraine of mines and explosive remnants of war.

Throughout the event, which concludes on December 18, veterans will have the opportunity to enhance their knowledge and skills in National Mine Action Standards, as well as gain insights into the main types of mechanized demining machines.

During the training, the veterans will get acquainted with the main tactical and technical characteristics of mechanized demining machines, their configuration, principles and particularities of operation in accordance with the type of terrain, season, as well as the procedure for using them alongside demining teams.

Special emphasis was placed on ensuring adherence to safety protocols during the operation of these machines.
