Ukraine’s air defense intercepted more than 4,600 aerial targets in August
Ukraine’s air defense intercepted more than 4,600 drones and missiles while repelling large-scale enemy attacks.
According to the Air Force of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, more than 50,000 tactical-level unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) were also neutralized in August.
How Ukraine’s air defense performed in August
In August 2026, Ukraine’s air defense forces intercepted:
- 25 Kh-101 cruise missiles;
- 8 Iskander-M/KN-23 ballistic missiles;
- 8 Kalibr cruise missiles;
- 21 Kh-59/69 guided air-launched missiles;
- 4 Iskander-K cruise missiles;
- 5 Oniks anti-ship missiles;
- 101 S8000 Banderol;
- 1,876 Shahed-131/136 attack UAVs;
- 1,460 Shahed-238 attack UAVs;
- 1,031 reconnaissance UAVs;
- 820 Lancet UAVs.
This result was achieved through the efforts of aviation, surface-to-air missile forces, electronic warfare and unmanned systems units, and mobile fire groups of the Defence Forces of Ukraine in repelling the attacks.
The enemy is intensifying attacks with jet-powered drones
Ballistic missiles remain the primary challenge for Ukraine’s air defense. However, over the summer, the enemy also intensified attacks with jet-powered drones. During some massive strikes, they accounted for around half of all long-range UAVs employed.
Jet-powered drones fly at speeds of around 400 km/h, reducing the time available to detect and engage them. S8000 Banderol loitering munitions, also referred to as drone-missiles, pose a distinct threat: they can reach speeds of up to 600 km/h. The enemy employs them regularly, virtually every day.
Their high speed and flight altitude make them more difficult for interceptor drones to engage and for mobile fire groups to shoot down. Countering such targets requires additional air defense forces and assets, including aircraft armed with air-to-air missiles, aircraft cannons, and ground-based air defense systems.
The Ministry of Defence of Ukraine is systematically working to strengthen air defense and is also calling on international partners to fund Ukrainian drone production and accelerate the delivery of missiles for air defense systems.
