Ukraine and Sweden discussed defence cooperation and the potential training for Ukrainian fighter pilots

During the official visit of the Ukrainian MoD delegation to Sweden, discussions revolved around enhancing collaboration in training Ukrainian pilots, formulating new defence policies and doctrines, and implementing innovative solutions.

These topics were addressed at the meetings attended by the Deputy Minister of Defence of Ukraine for European integration, Oleksandr Balanutsa, Swedish Ministry of Defence officials, and representatives from research and educational institutions.

“Ukraine strives not only to learn the experience of our partners but also to share its own best practices. The war is transforming every day, and the Ukrainian service members are paying a high price for this experience. We seek to use our knowledge to aid our allies in comprehending modern warfare,” said Oleksandr Balanutsa during a visit to the Swedish Defence University in Stockholm.

Besides that, the Deputy Minister of Defence of Ukraine, Oleksandr Balanutsa, and the Defence Policy Director of Swedish MoD, Victoria Malmer, discussed cooperation with Ukrainian research and innovation institutions to develop new defence policies and doctrines jointly.

One of the main highlights of the visit was an introductory meeting with the Swedish Air Force Combat Simulation Centre’s representatives, where the Ukrainian delegation received a detailed overview of how Swedish pilots are trained using aviation simulators.

The Ukrainian side has expressed interest in training pilots and specialists of the Ukrainian Air Force in Sweden.

Furthermore, the discussion also covered the provision of ACS 890 airborne early warning and control planes to Ukraine, their incorporation into the Ukrainian air defence system, and the coordination with current Ukrainian combat aircraft.

“Cooperation between Ukraine and Sweden in training and experience sharing is a key element in the training of our specialists. This will not only increase the effectiveness of combat operations but also contribute to a better understanding of modern warfare," summarised Oleksandr Balanutsa.
