Ukraine and NATO are developing an improved algorithm for the safe evacuation of wounded personnel at JATEC

Україна та НАТО на базі JATEC розробляють вдосконалений алгоритм безпечної евакуації поранених

The NATO–Ukraine Joint Analysis, Training and Education Centre (JATEC) is working on innovative solutions for the safe evacuation of wounded personnel from the battlefield.

This was reported by Colonel Valerii Vyshnivskyi, JATEC Director for Programme Implementation, during the conference on casualty evacuation (CASEVAC), organised in cooperation with the NATO Centre of Excellence for Military Medicine (NATO MILMED COE).

The enemy deliberately targets both evacuation teams and the wounded, which directly impacts the morale and psychological state of the unit. “Therefore, the effective evacuation of the wounded is one of the most difficult aspects of field medicine under large-scale aggression,” noted Colonel Valerii Vyshnivskyi.

Modern combat experience reveals a number of problems in interoperability, communication, and planning in this field. As a result, there is a need to review evacuation mechanisms and the provision of pre-medical care on the battlefield.

More than 230 participants from 18 NATO and partner countries took part in the expert meeting, which was held online and in person.

"During the JATEC conference, Ukraine's unique combat experience was reviewed, and cooperation with NATO was improved to strengthen the medical capabilities of the Alliance and Ukraine," said Brigadier General Wojciech Ozga, Commander of JATEC, during the opening of the forum.

Experts discussed the prospects for integrating civil-military planning, implementing innovative solutions (including UAVs, telemedicine, and AI) and improving training to enhance the overall effectiveness of CASEVAC.

In May 2025, JATEC and NATO MILMED COE held an online conference on antimicrobial resistance (AMR) and infection prevention and control (IPAC).
