Ukrainian air defense intercepted more than 8,000 air targets in October

In October, the Defence Forces of Ukraine destroyed more than 8,000 drones and missiles while repelling large-scale enemy attacks.
According to the Air Force of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, more than 43,000 tactical-level unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) were also neutralized over the past month.
How Ukraine’s air defense performed in October 2026
In October 2026, the following were intercepted:
- 14 Kh-101 cruise missiles;
- 11 Iskander-M/KN-23 ballistic missiles;
- 12 Kalibr cruise missiles;
- 7 Kh-59/69 guided air-launched missiles;
- 8 Iskander-K cruise missiles;
- 1 Zircon anti-ship missile;
- 143 S8000 Banderol cruise missiles;
- 4,455 Shahed-131/136 and Gerbera-type attack UAVs, as well as Parodiya-type decoy drones;
- 2,688 Shahed-238 attack UAVs;
- 1,104 reconnaissance UAVs;
- 809 Lancet UAVs.
Fighter and army aviation, surface-to-air missile units, mobile fire groups, unmanned systems operators, and electronic warfare (EW) systems work to destroy enemy air targets.
Ukraine continues to strengthen its multi-layered air defense system
Throughout October, the enemy systematically changed flight routes and altitudes, combining attack UAVs with decoys, large-scale missile strikes, and other tactics.
Ballistic missiles, which the enemy actively used to strike civilian infrastructure, remain another challenge. To protect Ukraine’s skies effectively, the Defence Forces need a greater number of effective means to counter russian ballistic missiles.
At the same time, Ukraine’s military continues to integrate and strengthen its multi-layered air defense system and to introduce new approaches to detecting and neutralizing air threats.
As previously reported, Minister of Defence of Ukraine Evgeniy Khmara visited air defense units and discussed with air defense personnel the possibility of combining different surface-to-air missile systems into a single tactical network.
