russian mines have killed or injured over 1,700 people in Ukraine since 2022

Since the start of russia’s full-scale war against Ukraine, 1,256 accidents involving mines and other explosive ordnance have been verified.
A representative of the Main Directorate of Mine Action, Civil Protection, and Environmental Safety announced this at a specialized workshop on the practical application of International Mine Action Standard (IMAS) 13.10, Victim Assistance in Mine Action..
The standard sets out approaches to ensuring that victims have unhindered access to psychological and psychosocial, medical, rehabilitation, financial, and educational assistance, as well as to their integration or adaptive reintegration into social and economic life.
510 people killed by russian mines, 1,247 injured
Incidents involving mines and other explosive ordnance have affected 1,757 people. Of these, 510 were killed and 1,247 sustained injuries of varying severity.
Those affected include pensioners, unemployed people, farmers, drivers, schoolchildren, critical infrastructure workers, and demining specialists.
Assistance to children requires special attention. Since the start of the full-scale war, 25 boys and one girl have been killed, and another 125 boys and 20 girls have been injured.
How landmine victims in Ukraine get assistance
At the workshop, a representative of the Ministry of Defence of Ukraine presented a practical model for collecting and analyzing data on victims of explosive ordnance.
It is based on an interactive map of incidents involving mines and explosive remnants of war, which the secretariat of the National Mine Action Agency administers and populates.
Particular attention was given to the mechanism for referring victims to organizations that can provide the assistance they need. A Ministry of Defence specialist demonstrated how, with a victim’s written consent, their data from the National Mine Action Agency’s mine incident database can be passed on to a verified organization with the relevant expertise.
The mechanism is already delivering practical results. Since 2023, 185 victims have received assistance through the referral mechanism. With the support of specialized humanitarian organizations, they have been provided with medical treatment, rehabilitation, transportation, remote education, and employment services. The total estimated value of the assistance provided is nearly UAH 3.4 million.
The Main Directorate of Mine Action, Civil Protection, and Environmental Safety systematically gathers data on mine accidents..
Based on this data, when a victim applies to an international organization, the organization covers:
- medical treatment and rehabilitation costs;
- tools for remote education and employment for people with injuries caused by mines and explosive ordnance.
As previously reported, units of the Ministry of Defence demined 1,347 hectares of liberated territory in September 2026.
