One year of the ‘Drone Line’ initiative: how $880 million in support is helping eliminate every third russian soldier on the front line

In spring 2025, the ‘Drone Line’ project, initiated by the President of Ukraine, was launched. Its objective is to systematically enhance the use of unmanned systems across the Defence Forces by scaling the most effective battlefield practices and securing a lasting technological advantage on the front line.
The ‘Drone Line’ is neither a separate military unit nor a one-time equipment supply project. Rather, it is an effort to build a unified system for employing drones along the line of contact.
Over this period, the project has become one of the largest foreign mechanisms for direct financing of Ukraine’s defense industry in the UAV sector.
The total funding under the package amounts to $880 million, with support from the Netherlands. The funding enables mass procurement of FPV drones, intelligence, surveillance & reconnaissance (ISR) drones, and bomber UAVs.
Over 1,000 crews are currently operating under the ‘Drone Line’ initiative. Units participating in the project account for nearly one in four russian service members eliminated on the front line — and in January–February, one in three. Over the winter alone, the Unmanned Systems Forces — including units participating in the ‘Drone Line’ project — neutralized about 30,000 occupiers.
The ‘Drone Line’ project is an initiative launched by the President of Ukraine aimed at scaling the most effective unmanned systems units of the Ukrainian military. The project is intended to establish a zone where enemy movement becomes impossible without losses, while Unmanned Systems Forces personnel can detect and destroy targets before they approach Ukrainian forces’ positions.
The development and scaling of the project are essential for stopping russia on the ground and implementing Ukraine’s War Plan announced by Defence Minister Mykhailo Fedorov.
The ‘Drone Line’ project demonstrates Ukraine’s transition from the fragmented use of drones to a systemic approach, in which drones become a full-fledged element of defense tactics. The initiative integrates combat experience, technology, and international support, shaping a model of modern warfare in which technological superiority directly affects the battlefield situation and helps save the lives of Ukrainian service members.
