In the first half of 2025, Ministry of Defence demining specialists cleared over 41,000 hectares of land
From January to June 2025, mine clearance units of the Ministry of Defence of Ukraine cleared 41,243 hectares of land of explosive ordnance in areas previously liberated from russian occupation. This is nearly half the area of Kyiv or more than 57,000 standard football fields.
Over the six-month period, 39,401.64 hectares of agricultural land were cleared, accounting for over 95% of the total demined area. January and May proved the most productive, with 8,755 and 7,847 hectares cleared, respectively.
Over the six months, sappers cleared 162 km of roadways, 93 km of railways, 48 km of electric power lines, and 16 km of pipelines. The largest amount of roadways clearance was recorded in June (57.59 km), and of railways clearance — in May (40.24 km). Additionally, 17.6 hectares of residential areas were cleared.
Throughout this period, demining specialists uncovered and neutralized 29,860 explosive devices. Since February 2022, a total of 448,614 explosive items have been neutralized.
As of the end of June, 107 mine action operators have been certified in Ukraine. At the beginning of the year, there were 80.
As a reminder, units from the following entities are involved in operations to clear explosive remnants of war from de-occupied areas:
- Armed Forces of Ukraine;
- State Transport Special Service;
- Explosive ordnance disposal units of the National Police of Ukraine;
- Pyrotechnic units of the State Emergency Service of Ukraine.
Humanitarian demining in Ukraine is exclusively carried out by mine action operators, as mandated by the Law of Ukraine on "Mine Action in Ukraine.”
