Interest in foreign language learning has significantly grown at Ukraine's higher military educational institutions. As of 2024, the number of military personnel enrolled in language courses increased by 14% compared to the previous period.

Most participants in language programs are active service members of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, accounting for 86.5%. Civil servants, employees of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, and academic staff also join the courses.

“Proficiency in English facilitates the implementation of NATO standards and effective interaction with allies by our military. This also demonstrates that Ukrainian military are becoming stronger and more modern,” said Deputy Minister of Defence of Ukraine, Brigadier General of Justice Serhii Melnyk.

The language training results highlight the programs' high effectiveness, with 93% of participants passing the exams. The sporadic instances of course non-completion are primarily due to service-related requirements.

In 2024, half of the program's participants reached Level 1 (“Survival” Level) according to NATO STANAG 6001 standards. 19.3% of the students have mastered Level 2 proficiency.

Language education for the military is a key pillar of Ukraine's Euro-Atlantic integration. The General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine developed, and the Ministry of Defence approved the corresponding Roadmap. The new legislation will make English language proficiency mandatory for specific categories of military personnel starting in 2027, highlighting the priority of this area in aligning with NATO standards.
