Ukraine officially introduces the specialty of UAV operators specializing in detecting explosive ordnance

A new category of operators has been officially introduced in Ukraine—external pilots of unmanned aerial vehicles responsible for aerial reconnaissance and detecting explosive ordnance.
The pertinent standard SSU (State Standard of Ukraine) 820-4:2025 “Mine action. Oversight processes. Part 4. Mechanized demining processes” was approved by the National Standardization Agency of Ukraine.
The document introduces the key principles and requirements for using mechanized demining equipment (MRE) during the clearance of territories from explosive ordnance. It will come into effect starting May 1, 2025.
Besides, the introduction of this standard will:
- regulate the use of various types of MRE, ranging from soil treatment tools to equipment for detecting and neutralizing explosive ordnance;
- establish requirements for MRE operators, their training, and certification;
- standardize safety measures during the operation of equipment, including remote and autonomous control;
- harmonize the national regulatory framework with international IMAS (International Mine Action Standards).
The standard was developed by experts from the Main Directorate of Mine Action, Civil Protection, and Environmental Safety, as well as from other mine action stakeholders.
It is worth mentioning that a dedicated testing ground is being planned for the trial runs of mechanized demining equipment. This will enable the equipment to be tested in real environments, thereby enhancing its operational effectiveness.
This standard marks an essential advancement in improving the effectiveness of humanitarian demining in Ukraine and incorporating leading global practices in countering the mine threat.
