Ukraine and the EU discuss swift support for key defence priorities

During a visit to Brussels, the Minister of Defence of Ukraine, Mykhailo Fedorov, held meetings with European Union officials to discuss support for Ukraine’s key defence needs.
Flexible and swift support for Ukraine
During a meeting with EU Commissioner for Enlargement Marta Kos, the parties discussed support for Ukraine’s key defence priorities.
Mykhailo Fedorov emphasised the importance of maintaining flexible and timely EU support for Ukraine.
EU loan and defence projects
A dedicated meeting was held with EU Commissioner for Defence and Space Andrius Kubilius.
The parties focused on mechanisms for directing EU loan funding. Ukraine is counting on the rapid disbursement of the first tranche to cover defence needs.
The parties also reviewed a list of projects that Ukraine plans to finance through the loan. Key areas include drones and strengthening air defence capabilities.
Instruments for supporting Ukraine
Mykhailo Fedorov and Andrius Kubilius also discussed additional avenues for securing support and developing a mutually beneficial industrial partnership.
The Minister of Defence of Ukraine also held a meeting with EU High Representative Kaja Kallas. During the meeting, the parties reviewed various instruments aimed at strengthening the security of Ukraine and the EU, including SAFE and the European Peace Facility (EPF).
For Ukraine, it is critically important that the €6.6 billion available under the EPF be directed towards new procurement to strengthen the country’s defence capabilities.
Mykhailo Fedorov thanked the European Union for its comprehensive support for Ukraine.
