Ukraine and Germany strengthen strategic defense cooperation

Ukraine’s Minister of Defence, Rustem Umerov, and First Deputy Minister Sergiy Boyev met with a delegation from the Federal Ministry of Defence of Germany to discuss expanding security support and strengthening the strategic partnership in the defense industry.

The Ukrainian delegation also included Deputy Minister of Defence, Lieutenant General Yevhen Moisiuk, and Lieutenant General Mykola Shevtsov. The German delegation was led by Major General Christian Freuding, Head of the Joint Planning and Command Staff of the Federal Ministry of Defence.

“Germany is among the leading providers of military aid to Ukraine, and we deeply value this support. However, the critical need for air defense, missile defense systems, and associated munitions persists. We must explore avenues to expand production capabilities,” said Ukraine's Minister of Defence, Rustem Umerov.

The Ukrainian side outlined several practical measures aimed at advancing strategic cooperation between the defense industries of both nations. These measures particularly focus on joint production of air and missile defense systems and associated munitions, the potential localization of German arms manufacturing in Ukraine, and the prospects for producing Ukrainian defense products in Germany.

“The year 2025 is of particular importance for Ukraine's defense, so it is crucial not to lose a single day in making decisions and organizing supplies,” emphasized First Deputy Minister of Defence, Sergiy Boyev.

The parties dedicated special attention to enhancing cooperation in unmanned systems. The Minister of Defence of Ukraine emphasized Ukraine’s readiness for technological partnership:

“Ukraine has significant potential in developing modern unmanned systems, and we are open to technological partnerships.”
