The President of Ukraine has appointed a new Chief of the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has appointed Major General Andrii Hnatov as the Chief of the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine. The decision was made upon the recommendation of Rustem Umerov, the Minister of Defence of Ukraine.

Major General Andrii Hnatov has over 27 years of military experience, having commanded a marine brigade, the troops of Operational Command “East,” and the Joint Forces of the Armed Forces of Ukraine.

Lieutenant General Anatolii Barhylevych, the former Chief of the General Staff, has been appointed Chief Inspector of the Ministry of Defence of Ukraine. His mission is to ensure compliance with military standards and strengthen discipline within the armed forces.

Defence Minister Rustem Umerov thanked Lieutenant General Barhylevych for his service: “His experience and professionalism were crucial in organizing Ukraine’s defense during the most challenging times.”

The Minister highlighted that Lieutenant General Barhylevych will continue his work within the team and will take responsibility for reforming the Main Inspectorate of the Ministry of Defence.

“His expertise is now essential for reforming the Main Inspectorate and implementing modern control mechanisms in the Defence Forces. These measures will improve discipline, responsiveness, and the overall combat readiness of our troops,” Rustem Umerov emphasized.

The Minister further stated that changes in the command structure and the introduction of new standards in the Armed Forces of Ukraine will support the strengthening of the army's combat capabilities.
