Simplified algorithm for return to duty after an Absence Without Leave (AWOL) before March 1: The Ministry of Defence reminds how to do it

Service members who went Absence Without Leave (AWOL) before November 29, 2024, still have the option to return to service until March 1, 2025. Then, all payments and social guarantees will be reinstated within 72 hours, and a service member will be able to transfer to another unit via Army+ based on a letter of recommendation.

In the past week alone, approximately 300 reports for return to duty after AWOL were processed through Army+. The process—from submitting a report in the app to full reinstatement—takes less than a week.

“Thanks to Army+, we have reduced the time required to return to duty after AWOL to just a few days, eliminating the need for unnecessary interactions or in-person report submissions. Our smartphone services enable personnel not only to reinstate their military service but also to take control of it and find a role where they can maximize their contribution,” said Kateryna Chernohorenko, Deputy Minister of Defence for Digital Development.

For service members who went AWOL before November 29, the option to return to duty remains available until March 1, 2025, under the simplified procedure, with reinstatement occurring within three days.

To facilitate this, the following steps must be followed:

  1. Submit a report for Return to Duty After AWOL via Army+ app
  2. Within 24 hours, arrive at the nearest Military Law Enforcement Service office
  3. Receive on-site consultation and proceed safely to the reserve battalion
  4. Within 72 hours, complete reinstatement, restoring social benefits and financial payments.
  5. Submit a report via Army+ again, this time for Change of Duty Station, attaching a recommendation letter from the desired unit
  6. Within 72 hours, receive approval and prepare for transfer to the new unit

After 1 March, personnel can still return to duty; however, the simplified process via Army+ will no longer be applicable. Reinstatement in such cases may take several months, during which service remuneration and other benefits will remain suspended.
