Serhii Melnyk: Over 5,500 women are currently serving on the front line
Women now play an integral role in the Armed Forces of Ukraine. They hold positions across various military specialties, such as medics, signal operators, and snipers.
“Over 5,500 female service members are presently serving on the front line. As of January 1, 2025, more than 70,000 women are serving in the Armed Forces of Ukraine, which is 20% more than in 2022,” said Deputy Minister of Defence of Ukraine, Brigadier General of Justice Serhii Melnyk. The state is evolving social protection policy to strengthen their rights and enhance equal opportunities.
Women in the Armed Forces of Ukraine have the same rights as men to hold positions, advance in their careers, and attain military ranks. At the same time, the legislation ensures additional social guarantees, including separate service facilities for accommodation during camp deployments, restrictions on physical exertion, the option of voluntary discharge in case of pregnancy, regardless of martial law, etc.
“Every day, women in the military demonstrate their resilience and professionalism. We are committed to ensuring equal opportunities and conditions for their service. That is why the Ministry of Defence continues to actively implement the gender equality policy in the army, providing equal opportunities for career growth, developing specialized programs, and fostering international partnerships with Canada, the United Kingdom, Sweden, and NATO,” noted Serhii Melnyk.
He emphasized that the legislation explicitly prohibits discrimination, violence, and sexual harassment in the military. The responsibility for such violations ranges from disciplinary measures to criminal liability.
The Deputy Minister of Defence also emphasized that one of the ministry's priorities in this regard is ensuring medical support for servicewomen and full access to medical services.
