Rustem Umerov and Penny Wong discussed enhancing defence cooperation between Ukraine and Australia

Ukraine’s Defence Minister Rustem Umerov held a meeting with a delegation headed by Australian Minister for Foreign Affairs Penny Wong.  

During the discussions, Rustem Umerov expressed gratitude to Australia for its substantial support in countering russian aggression. The Minister emphasised that Australia stands as the largest supplier of military aid among non-NATO countries.

The parties discussed emerging challenges, including the threats posed by the involvement of North Korean troops in the war. “This represents a shared threat to both Ukraine and Australia,” Umerov stated.

During the meeting, the delegations analysed the current battlefield situation and identified key areas for cooperation in 2025. The key priorities include supplying Ukrainian soldiers with weapons and equipment, as well as advancing joint defence projects.

“We are counting on funding and the participation of Australian companies in the production of drones, particularly long-range drone missiles,” the Ukrainian Defence Minister emphasised.

Rustem Umerov highlighted the importance of strengthening the defence partnership with Australia: “Deepening defence cooperation with Australia is a crucial step toward strengthening the free world's security. Our shared goal is Ukraine’s victory and the defence of the international order.”

He also noted that the meeting marked another step in reinforcing the strategic partnership between Ukraine and Australia, focused on enhancing international security.
