Rustem Umerov and Andrius Kubilius discussed strengthening EU support for Ukraine's defense industry

A meeting was held in Kyiv between Ukraine’s Minister of Defence, Rustem Umerov, and Andrius Kubilius, the EU Commissioner for Defence and Space. The parties discussed the current security situation, Ukraine's efforts to counter Russia's armed aggression, and further steps for developing defense industry capacity.
The Minister of Defence thanked the European Union for its unwavering support since the beginning of russia's full-scale invasion. During the meeting, the Ukrainian delegation briefed on the situation at the front and stressed Ukraine's steadfast commitment to achieving a just peace.
“As the enemy continues attempts to destroy our statehood, we emphasized the importance of ongoing support for strengthening Ukraine’s defense capabilities,” Rustem Umerov emphasized.
The Minister noted that, in response to the challenges posed by the war, Ukraine has substantially reinforced its domestic defense industry. In particular, Ukraine seeks to deepen its integration into the European defense industry.
“We look forward to integration into the European defense industry for the joint production of critically important security solutions. We focused on new EU mechanisms designed to secure additional funding for Ukrainian production. We are ready for deep cooperation with Europe to effectively implement large-scale joint projects,” the Defence Minister stated.
Special attention was given to the EU’s new SAFE credit mechanism, designed to support arms procurement. Ukraine expressed keen interest in participating in this initiative.
“Europe is ready to invest in its security, and Ukraine’s experience will be very valuable to our partners. We have technologies and capabilities that we are ready to share with our allies. We are also interested in developing the production of advanced European systems, which are critically needed by our military to defend Ukraine effectively. A strong Europe is only possible together with a strong Ukraine," Rustem Umerov emphasized.
