Ukraine holds its first international military surgery and resuscitation course

The Ministry of Defence of Ukraine is enhancing training for surgical teams that provide care to wounded service members in close proximity to the line of contact. Ukraine has hosted its first international military surgery and resuscitation course, “Tryzub.”
Instructors from the American College of Surgeons (ACS) and the International Association for Trauma Surgery and Intensive Care (IATSIC) took part in delivering the course.
Sixteen physicians completed the training: eight surgeons and eight anesthesiologists. They serve at stabilization points and with forward surgical teams near the front line.
When a service member goes into combat, they must know that if they are wounded, people nearby will do everything they can to save their life. That kind of trust matters enormously at the front. And that trust is built on training, experience, and effective teamwork. That is why we want our medical personnel to have the best possible knowledge and skills and to be able to work as one team.
Three military surgery training modules
The week-long program comprised three training modules:
- ATLS — Advanced Trauma Life Support;
- DSTC — Definitive Surgical Trauma Care;
- ASSET — Advanced Surgical Skills for Exposure in Trauma.
One of the course’s distinctive features was that surgeons and anesthesiologists trained together. They practiced working as one team in critical situations.
Plans are underway to expand the course across the Defence Forces
“Tryzub” is a pilot project for a new military medical training system.
The goal is to enable Ukrainian surgeons and anesthesiologists to train in line with best practices used in the United States and other NATO member states.
The Ministry of Defence plans to expand such courses so that all Defence Forces surgeons and anesthesiologists can train according to best practices from the United States and other NATO member states.
The course was conducted with the support of partners Razom4Ukraine and Expertise France.
