Kateryna Chernohorenko: The Ministry of Defence has established the Space Policy Directorate
The Ministry of Defence has established the Space Policy Directorate. This was announced during the Space For Ukraine Forum. The primary objective of the new Directorate is to consolidate internal and external capabilities to advance Ukraine’s military space sector.
The Directorate will focus on developing the regulatory and legal framework, identifying the most cutting-edge space technologies, and serving as the central point of contact for collaboration with both internal and external stakeholders in this domain, including developers, scientists, entrepreneurs, and international partners.
“Over the past three years of full-scale invasion, Ukraine has gained invaluable experience in the space domain thanks to our partners. Despite the challenges of the war, we have not only preserved our ambitions in the space industry but are also ready to realize them. For decades, Ukrainian scientists, engineers, and industrialists have been establishing a robust scientific foundation and advancing space technologies. On this foundation, we will create new opportunities to strengthen the Defence Forces,” emphasized Kateryna Chernohorenko, Deputy Minister of Defence for Digital Development.
Additionally, during the Forum, the Ministry of Defence presented a ten-year roadmap for the development of the space industry. In the first two years, the Space Policy Directorate will conduct an audit of space infrastructure to identify critical needs. Strategic documents will also be formulated to define the industry’s development trajectory.
The next phase will involve the development of indigenous satellites, space situational awareness systems, and their integration into defense technologies. The final step will be the creation of a comprehensive space defense segment—a satellite constellation that will provide real-time analytics and become part of global security initiatives.
