Ivan Sopiha: Ukraine is interested in involving U.S. companies in humanitarian demining

Ukraine seeks to engage U.S. companies in the clearance of areas contaminated by explosive ordnance resulting from russia’s full-scale aggression.

This was discussed during a meeting between the State Secretary of the Ministry of Defence of Ukraine, Ivan Sopiha, and representatives of U.S. companies with experience in mine action operations in Asia and Africa.

Ivan Sopiha outlined the situation regarding the demining of Ukrainian territories. He emphasized that mine action efforts continue despite ongoing russian shelling.

“Historically, most countries initiated demining operations only after active hostilities had ceased. In contrast, Ukraine began clearing land contaminated with explosive ordnance already during the full-scale war,” Ivan Sopiha emphasized.

He noted that these efforts help restore normal life in the regions of the country liberated by Ukraine’s Defence Forces. To expedite this process, Ukraine aims to engage new, experienced mine action operators with financial support from partner nations.

During the meeting, the parties also discussed other key needs, challenges, and opportunities for implementing joint humanitarian demining projects.
