Ivan Havryliuk: Over 5 thousand square kilometers of Ukrainian land have been cleared of mines since the beginning of full-scale russian aggression

Since the beginning of the large-scale armed russian aggression, state mine action operators have examined and demined 5308 km² of Ukrainian territory. The progress of mine clearance efforts was discussed at a meeting of the National Mine Action Agency chaired by the First Deputy Minister of Defence of Ukraine, Lieutenant General Ivan Havryliuk.

The event was attended by representatives of the Ministry of Defence, the Ministry of Internal Affairs, the Ministry of Economy, the Ministry of Reintegration of the Temporarily Occupied Territories, the State Labor Service, the State Emergency Service, and other agencies and companies involved in mine action.

The meeting participants discussed measures to implement the Plan for Humanitarian Demining of the De-occupied Territories of Ukraine for 2024 and the Plan for Inspecting Agricultural Land for Explosive Ordnance Disposal.

Non-technical checks have been carried out in 59 territorial communities since the beginning of the year, with 235 km² being pinpointed as potentially contaminated.

The ongoing humanitarian demining activities are taking place at 282 sites, spanning a total area of 17.5 km², with 88 sites, totaling 7.23 km², already been transferred under the control of local communities.

Furthermore, 2059 km² of agricultural land were inspected and demined in accordance with the Action Plan for Clearing Agricultural Land of Explosive Ordnance. These territories were successfully restored for practical purposes.

“The initial non-technical check resulted in a reduction of the size of areas impacted by explosive ordnance from 156,000 km² to 142,000 km²,” said Lieutenant General Ivan Havryliuk.

The National Mine Action Agency members agreed to establish a unified stance for Ukraine's involvement in the Fifth Review Conference of the Convention on the Prohibition of the Use, Stockpiling, Production and Transfer of Anti-Personnel Mines and on their Destruction.

Besides that, Colonel Ruslan Berehulia, Head of the Secretariat of the National Mine Action Agency, who heads the Main Directorate of Mine Action, Civil Protection, and Environmental Safety, announced the start of work on mine action plans for 2025.

The mine clearance in the territorial waters of Ukraine was also addressed. Ukraine is scheduled to receive three more mine clearance vessels next year. There are currently two vessels of this kind in Ukraine.

Besides that, the support from Germany, including specialized equipment for the detection and classification of explosive items, has enhanced the effectiveness of maritime demining operations.
