Investing in Ukraine’s defense industry is one of the most effective steps to support Ukrainian defenders, stated Defense Minister Rustem Umerov during a meeting in Kyiv with the EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Josep Borrell.

The Defense Minister introduced the EU delegation to Ukraine’s drone production potential, currently valued at $11 billion. 

“Of this, we can invest around $3 billion independently, but to fully develop our potential, we need financial support from partners,” Rustem Umerov noted. He expressed hope that a substantial portion of the next tranche from frozen russian assets would be directed toward strengthening Ukraine’s defense industry.

The minister also acknowledged the EU’s considerable military assistance, which has reached €44 billion, and expressed confidence in continued support.

“I am sincerely grateful to the European Union for its leadership and support in many areas. I believe our combined efforts will overcome all challenges on the path to peace in Ukraine and Europe,” emphasized the Defense Minister.

Additionally, Rustem Umerov recognized Josep Borrell’s personal contribution to Ukraine’s diplomatic, economic, and military support, presenting him with the MoD’s award, the “Cross of Honor,” as a token of gratitude.
