In 2024, russia inflicted environmental damage on the Ministry of Defence of Ukraine’s facilities, amounting to over UAH 42 billion

As of the end of 2024, the damage caused by russia to the natural environment at the Ministry of Defence of Ukraine’s facilities exceeded UAH 42 billion.

Experts from the Ministry of Defence of Ukraine examined 61 military sites impacted by environmental damage due to russian missile and artillery strikes and recorded the following damage: 

  • Soil pollution due to waste from destruction: UAH 40.26 billion (precise amount: UAH 40,260,446,746) 
  • Soil contamination by petroleum products: UAH 1.56 billion (precise amount: UAH 1,564,980,000)
  • Fugitive emissions of pollutants into the atmosphere: UAH 96.85 million (precise amount: UAH 96,850,034)
  • Losses to the forest resource: UAH 145.29 million (precise amount: UAH 145,293,946)

The working group that conducted the assessment consisted of representatives from the Main Directorate for Mine Action, Civil Protection, and Environmental Safety, the Center of Excellence for Mine Action and Environmental Safety, and the State Environmental Inspectorate of Ukraine.

Materials detailing confirmed environmental damage and damage calculations were provided to the Prosecutor General's Office for appropriate action and incorporation into active criminal cases.
