Hitting the enemy: russia loses 137 tanks, 1,099 artillery systems, and over 4,000 vehicles in January

In January, the Defence Forces of Ukraine inflicted some of the most significant losses on the russian army in recent months. In manpower losses alone, the enemy lost over 31,700 personnel—equivalent to the strength of nearly three divisions.

According to the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, the Defence Forces of Ukraine destroyed or incapacitated 137 enemy tanks in January, equivalent to more than four tank battalions, marking the highest monthly figure since May 2025, when 138 tanks were put out of action.

The enemy also incurred substantial artillery losses, with Ukrainian warriors destroying and damaging 1,099 artillery systems in January, equivalent to more than 60 artillery battalions, marking the highest figure in the past five months.

The Defence Forces of Ukraine also destroyed and damaged 45 multiple launch rocket systems (MLRS), 24 air defense systems, and 4,021 vehicles—the highest vehicle losses since April 2025, when the russian army lost 4,104 units.

At the same time, overall losses of the russian army in armored vehicles in January 2026, as throughout 2025, are no longer as significant as in 2023–2024, when the enemy was losing 300–500 armored vehicles per month. This is due to the substantial depletion of armored vehicle and artillery stockpiles, as well as russia’s inability to replace the extensive losses across many categories of weapons and military equipment.

Before the full-scale invasion, russia ranked among the world’s leaders in the number of tanks and artillery systems held in storage. However, the Defence Forces of Ukraine have systematically destroyed a significant portion of these reserves. Analysis of current statistics indicates that, across specific categories of weapons and military equipment, the russian army is approaching critical shortages.
