On the Day of Remembrance of the Defenders of Ukraine, Minister of Defence Denys Shmyhal, alongside President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, attended the first interment ceremony for Ukrainian warriors at the National Military Memorial Cemetery.

The event was also attended by Speaker of the Verkhovna Rada Ruslan Stefanchuk, Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine General Oleksandr Syrskyi, Chief of the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine Lieutenant General Andriy Hnatov, Vice Prime Minister for the Restoration of Ukraine and Minister of Communities and Territories Development Oleksii Kuleba, Minister of Veterans Affairs Natalia Kalmykova, Minister of Internal Affairs Ihor Klymenko, Deputy Head of the Office of the President of Ukraine Pavlo Palisa, and military personnel.

“Today marks the first interments here — of fallen warriors whose names have not yet been established. The state is making every effort to identify the fallen so that Ukrainian heroes who gave their lives for the country’s freedom may receive the honor they deserve,” the Minister of Defence said.

He stated that Ukraine is shaping a new culture of national remembrance, with the memorial serving as one step in establishing a shared space to pay tribute to all those who died for Ukraine.

“Although the National Military Memorial Cemetery is only beginning its history, we believe it will serve, for generations to come, as a new symbol of Ukraine’s struggle and the remembrance of those who sacrificed for the country,” emphasized Denys Shmyhal.
