Denys Shmyhal and Valdis Dombrovskis discuss implementation of the SAFE initiative and strengthening sanctions against russia

Денис Шмигаль та Валдіс Домбровскіс обговорили реалізацію SAFE і посилення санкцій проти росії

Minister of Defence of Ukraine Denys Shmyhal held talks with Valdis Dombrovskis, European Commissioner for Economy and Productivity.

The parties focused on the practical implementation of the SAFE instrument, a €150 billion EU defence initiative already joined by 19 countries. In particular, Ukraine’s needs, priority projects, and the involvement of Ukrainian defence companies were coordinated.

The discussion also covered financing Ukraine’s defence requirements, notably through the ERA mechanism. The next tranche is expected as early as October.

The issue of confiscating frozen russian assets was also raised. Denys Shmyhal emphasised that the aggressor’s funds are to be directed toward enhancing Ukraine’s defence capabilities.

Furthermore, the parties discussed measures aimed at further weakening russia’s military apparatus. The EU has already reached an agreement on the 19th package of sanctions, and Ukraine looks forward to its prompt approval, the Minister of Defence noted.

“Together we are reinforcing Ukraine’s resilience and safeguarding Europe’s security,” Denys Shmyhal concluded.
