Denys Shmyhal and Sweden’s Defence Minister sign Letter of Intent on partnership in defence innovation
In Stockholm, Ukraine’s Minister of Defence Denys Shmyhal and Sweden’s Minister for Defence Pål Jonson signed a Letter of Intent on partnership in defence innovation.
The Letter of Intent creates new opportunities to engage Swedish investment and technology in the development of Ukraine’s defence industry, giving impetus to new forms of cooperation and promoting Ukraine’s integration into the European innovation and industrial ecosystem.
Denys Shmyhal thanked Sweden for its consistent and unwavering support since the onset of the war against the russian aggressor. The Minister of Defence reported that Ukraine has received over $9 billion in assistance from the Swedish people over this period, and that Sweden has announced the allocation of approximately $8 billion in 2026 and 2027 to further strengthen military support for Ukraine.
“We are thankful for Sweden’s participation in the PURL initiative and value its involvement in the ‘Danish model,’ which has made it possible to supply 400 deep-strike assets to the Armed Forces of Ukraine,” Denys Shmyhal emphasised.
During the meeting, the ministers discussed strengthening Ukraine’s air capabilities, with particular attention to the potential supply of Gripen fighter aircraft systems by Sweden.
Denys Shmyhal suggested to his Swedish counterpart exploring ways for the joint development of surface-to-air missile interceptors and the joint production of radar systems.
Particular attention was given to strengthening Ukraine’s air defence, including the supply of additional missiles.
“I extend gratitude to friendly Sweden for always standing by our side,” Denys Shmyhal said.
