By recycling destroyed equipment, the Ministry of Defence contributed to the replenishment of the national budget

Approximately 1,000 tons of scrap metal containing precious metals have been accumulated at the sites of military equipment destroyed during the hostilities and at certain military units of the Armed Forces of Ukraine.

The scrap metal contained 100 kg of gold, 1 900 kg of silver, and 25 kg of platinum. It is processed by the Ministry of Defence only through specialized private processing companies.

As per Colonel Oleh Koval, Head of the Department for Alienation and Utilization of Surplus Military Property, the Ministry of Defense had a revenue of UAH 24.7 million from processing precious metals in the first seven months of 2024. It is foreseen that an additional UAH 18 million will be obtained by the end of the year.

Funds from selling valuable metals are apportioned in line with National Bank of Ukraine regulations, as follows: The national budget receives 80% of revenues from gold and platinum metals and 50% from silver. The remaining 20% and 50%, correspondingly, are allocated to a dedicated fund of the Ministry of Defence and are used to meet the needs of the Armed Forces.
