An interdepartmental commission is investigating the causes behind the malfunctioning of 120-mm mortar shells
For the past three weeks, the Ministry of Defence has been actively investigating the causes of the malfunctioning 120-mm mortar shells.
The lack of public statements does not imply that the Ministry of Defence is inactive or neglecting to address information from the military or media.
The Ministry of Defence is working within a confidential environment to achieve the highest levels of efficiency and security. Due to the ongoing russian aggression, information regarding the progress of activities is sensitive and, as such, remains restricted.
Currently, the Ministry of Defence has suspended the use of the specified consignments of ammunition in the Defence Forces, as well as their distribution to combat units, until the causes of the malfunction are determined.
The consignment of delivered ammunition has been withdrawn for further investigation. Instead, mortar shells from imported manufacturers will be supplied.
The preliminary findings of the interdepartmental commission's investigation into the supply of defective 120-mm mortar shells suggest potential causes for the defects, including substandard powder charges or breaches in ammunition storage conditions, which led to their damage.
The State Bureau of Investigation has initiated a criminal case into this matter. Based on the findings of the interdepartmental commission, appropriate personnel decisions will be made regarding the officials responsible.
The Ministry of Defence emphasizes that it is the procurer of this type of weapon for the Defence Forces. At the same time, the Ministry for Strategic Industries serves as the executor of the state order.
Currently, the Ministry of Defence has outlined measures to enhance the quality control process. This entails strengthening the monitoring of storage conditions and refining inspection procedures at every stage—from production and storage to delivery to the front line.
The interdepartmental commission will also inspect mortar shells of other calibers to ensure adherence to production standards, component quality, and proper storage conditions.
