Land Forces
The Land Forces are the main combat force of the Ukrainian army and play a key role in both peacetime and wartime. Modern Land Forces consist of various components: mechanized and tank troops, missile troops and artillery, army aviation, air defense units, special forces, as well as territorial defense brigades. This structure ensures full readiness for combat missions both on the front line and in the rear.
Organizationally, the Land Forces include the Land Forces Command, operational commands with subordinate units, territorial defense brigades, a reserve corps, training centers and training grounds. Special focus is put on combat training, based on the experience of participating in combat operations, such as the Joint Force operation, and the implementation of NATO standards.
Since the beginning of the full-scale invasion on February 24, 2022, the Land Forces of the Armed Forces of Ukraine have played a key role in defending the country from the aggression of the russian federation. They demonstrated exceptional effectiveness in conducting military operations, carrying out counterattacks, defending key positions and cities of our country.
The successful defense of the capital and repelling of the enemy’s offensive in northern Ukraine, which made russian forces retreat from the Kyiv, Chernihiv, and Sumy regions in April 2022, remarkable offensive operations in the south and east leading to the liberation of significant territories, including the city of Kherson in November 2022, participation in battles in eastern Ukraine, where the Ground Forces continue to demonstrate resilience and organization under intense combat conditions. This is far from an exhaustive list of the Land Forces' accomplishments in the ongoing war.
The core of the Land Forces consists of mechanized and tank troops, responsible for holding and defending captured positions, breaking through enemy defenses, and destroying enemy forces. Thanks to active international support, the Land Forces have received a significant amount of modern Western weaponry and military equipment, which has greatly enhanced their combat capabilities. This includes Leopard and M1 Abrams tanks, M113 armored personnel carriers, M2 Bradley and CV90 infantry fighting vehicles, HIMARS artillery systems, M777, PzH 2000, 2S22 "Bohdana," etc.
Missile troops and artillery are the main means of fire damage to the enemy. They destroy weapons of mass destruction, artillery, tanks, enemy manpower and other targets.
Air defense troops protect land forces and critical facilities from aerial threats by destroying aircraft, helicopters, cruise missiles and drones.
Army aviation provides air support to the troops on the ground, conducting reconnaissance, fire damage to the enemy, evacuation of the wounded and delivery of personnel and equipment.
Special forces support the combat activities of the Land Forces, including reconnaissance, engineering, topographical units, communication units, radiation, chemical and biological protection and radio-electronic warfare.
The Land Forces of the Ukrainian Armed Forces continue to strengthen their combat preparedness by incorporating new ideas learned from combat operations and implementing NATO standards, which ensures reliable protection of the state in the challenging conditions of modern warfare.
