Medical Forces
The Medical Forces of the Armed Forces of Ukraine are responsible for the medical support of the troops, providing vital assistance on the front lines and in the rear. They consist of command bodies, medical subunits, institutions, and units, enabling a comprehensive approach to the medical care of military personnel, including in the most challenging conditions.
With the onset of the full-scale invasion by the russian federation, the Medical Forces quickly adapted to new challenges, organizing medical support for military units even in the enemy's encirclement. Their work has become a key element in the survival and restoration of the combat readiness of Ukrainian forces on various fronts.
In 2022, a Unified Medical Space was established, marking a watershed moment not just in Ukrainian medical care but also in global military practice. Ukraine became the first country to implement such a system amid large-scale aggression. This experience has generated significant interest among NATO member states, which are studying and adapting Ukrainian developments to update their medical standards, previously designed for expeditionary operations.
Despite the ongoing hostilities, significant improvements have been made to the system of medical evacuation measures, the operational expansion of the network of military medical commissions has been ensured, and the Concept for the Development of Rehabilitation in the Armed Forces of Ukraine has been adopted. These steps not only help provide timely assistance to the wounded but also ensure their further treatment and recovery.
One of the significant achievements of the Medical Forces has been the digitalization of medical processes. As part of this initiative, location-based networks have been deployed in 22 medical institutions of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, which have transitioned to electronic document management. Another 7 institutions are planning to implement a medical information system, which will greatly improve patient data management and simplify communication between medical facilities.
Significant attention is being given to training soldiers in the basics of self-aid and mutual aid. This is critically important in combat situations when a wounded individual may be left without medical personnel nearby. The ability to provide first aid, self-care, and mutual assistance in the initial minutes after an injury can save lives, making training in tactical medicine a top priority.
To strengthen this area, a pilot course titled "Tactical Medicine Instructor Level II" has been launched, aimed at training platoon combat medics. They will serve as instructors in training units across various branches of the Armed Forces of Ukraine. This will establish a unified system for quality control in the training of service members in tactical medicine, which is critically important in modern warfare conditions.
