In 2024, the arsenal of the Defence Forces was expanded with dozens of new models of small arms and grenade launchers
In 2024, the Ministry of Defence codified and adopted approximately 30 new models of small arms and almost 10 models of grenade launchers for use in the Defence Forces.
The list of codified models includes pistols, machine guns, assault rifles, and sniper rifles produced by arms manufacturers from Germany, Czechia, Belgium, the United States, and others. Among the small arms adopted for use also are products made by Ukrainian firearms manufacturers, including a versatile rifle-shotgun that can be used against both enemy infantry and drones.
“The capability of an army is primarily measured by the strength of its weapon arsenal. The number of tanks, artillery systems, and MLRS is important, but so is the infantry's firepower. New warfare instruments in our warriors' hands provide greater capabilities on the battlefield. Modern small arms and grenade launchers from leading global arms manufacturers and domestic gunsmiths enable our warriors to engage enemy targets with greater accuracy and at extended ranges. Enhanced weapon performance and increased reliability are the factors that determine both the effectiveness of combat missions and the safety of our warriors,” said the First Deputy Minister of Defence of Ukraine, Lieutenant General Ivan Havryliuk.
Ukrainian military personnel operating Western-made small arms in combat conditions report their high effectiveness. These weapon systems stand out for their superior accuracy and extended range. Our warriors highlight the ergonomic advantages and ease of use of Western-designed assault rifles and machine guns. It is worth noting that Western-made assault rifles use 5.56 × 45 mm NATO rounds, which deliver higher bullet energy than the Soviet 5.45 × 39 mm small arms ammunition. Consequently, Western weapons provide a more significant lethal advantage. Compared to Soviet or russian models, European and American weapons also stand out for their significantly higher standards of factory craftsmanship.
All grenade launchers codified in 2024 are of NATO 40 mm and 84 mm calibers. Among them are products from European and American weapon manufacturers. A hand-held grenade launcher and a 40 mm under-barrel grenade launcher are among the Ukrainian models adopted.
